The temptation is to over-pack. Avoid this temptation. Here’s what’s provided for you:
All food and cooking gear
Canoes, paddles, PFDs, tent, packs
First aid kit
What you need to bring is listed below, but know this: you will share a gear pack with one other person. That pack will hold all your clothes, sleeping bag and pad, and your tent. On every trip, gear gets left behind because it doesn’t fit and/or is unnecessary.
Sleeping bag (rated to 15 degrees F) in a stuff sack
Sleeping pad (inflatable is preferred because it packs smaller)
Camp chair (keep it small; optional)
Clothing (polys and wool; no cotton):
Pants: one pair of shorts, one pair of long pants (no jeans!)
Shirts: one short-sleeved, one long-sleeved
Underwear: two or three
Shoes: one pair to wear all day (closed-toed sandals or old sneakers) and one dry pair to wear in camp at night (slides or Crocs)
Socks: two pairs (the thicker the wool the better; no cotton!)
Sun hat and beanie for warmth
Waterproof rain jacket and pants
Swimsuit (optional)
Other items:
Headlamp
Sunscreen
Bug spray (at least 30% DEET)
Toiletries (keep it minimal)
Water bottle (32 oz. Nalgene or similar)
Warm liquid mug (Yeti or similar, optional)
Sunglasses
If it’s not on this list, either it’s provided or you don’t need it. Of course, email Tony with any questions.
Finally, here’s the reading list for the trip (optional but recommended, in order of importance):
The God of Wild Places by Tony Jones
The Singing Wilderness by St. Sigurd Olson
The Idea of the Holy by Rudolf Otto
Wisdom of the Wilderness by Gerald May
The Practice of the Wild by Gary Snyder
So you’re going to the BWCA…
You’ve got questions, and this page is meant to provide answers. Please read it thoroughly and refer back to it when you pack for the trip.
On the day we depart from the Twin Cities, we will gather at Tony’s house at 9am. We will stop in Duluth around midday for lunch, then we’ll drive up the North Shore of Lake Superior and stop in Grand Marais for any last-minute supplies. That’s also the last time you’ll have cell coverage. We’ll then proceed to the outfitter, where we’ll pack and sleep in a bunkhouse. The next morning, we’ll depart by 8am and be paddling by 9am.
Before you arrive, please print and sign the following forms, and bring them with you.
